The project “Demonstration of energy-saving shrimp farming system using biomass” has been implemented since 2022, in cooperation between Yuko Keiso Co., Ltd (Japan) and Tuan Hien Aquaculture Company Limited, under the supervision of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap.
The model applies solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) powered by biogas from agricultural by-products, combined with an IoT-based water quality monitoring system. Shrimp are farmed at high density (500 shrimp/m³) while still achieving a survival rate of up to 85%, improving both productivity and quality.
Electricity is generated from a 60 m³ biogas fermentation system that produces methane gas to power generators. Integrated sensors monitor temperature, pressure, and gas concentrations, enabling fully automated operation. Each 1,000 m² pond helps reduce about 15.5 tons of CO₂ emissions per year, and up to 26.9 tons compared with conventional intensive models.
Currently, the model is being piloted in two ponds, initially showing clear effectiveness in cost savings, pollution reduction, and productivity improvement. Dong Thap will continue technology transfer and provide support for wider adoption, aiming to build a green, circular, and sustainable agriculture.
