VietShrimp 2024, under the theme “In company with shrimp farmers,” took place from March 20–22, 2024, at the Ca Mau Conference Center. The event featured approximately 200 booths from domestic and international businesses. Beyond connecting enterprises, partners, and customers, VietShrimp 2024 also served as a forum for representatives of the “four stakeholders”—the State, scientists, businesses, and farmers—to discuss and identify solutions for developing Vietnam’s shrimp industry towards efficiency and sustainability, reaffirming its position in the global market.
Pangasius Exports Show Positive Recovery
According to VASEP, pangasius exports in Q3/2024 were estimated at USD 544 million, a nearly 14% increase compared to Q3/2023. Most markets showed strong growth: the U.S. reached USD 240 million, up 23%; Brazil recorded USD 81 million, up 26%; and Thailand achieved USD 43 million, up 9%. A standout trend in the first nine months of 2024 was the processed pangasius segment, which, despite a modest market share, saw a remarkable 42% increase in export revenue. Frozen whole fish exports rose by 24%, while fillets and frozen portions increased slightly by 4%.
10 Years of Vietnam Fisheries Surveillance Force
2024 marked the 10th anniversary of the Vietnam Fisheries Surveillance Force. Over the past decade, the force has carried out activities such as supporting fishermen, patrolling, inspecting, and enforcing maritime law, as well as participating in search-and-rescue operations. By accompanying fishermen in offshore activities and contributing to the sustainable development of marine economies, the force continues its mission to modernize and maintain security, safeguard the country’s fisheries, and protect Vietnam’s sacred maritime sovereignty.
2nd Da River Fish and Shrimp Festival in Hoa Binh
Following the success of the inaugural event, the “2nd Da River Fish and Shrimp Festival of Hoa Binh Province” was held on November 19, 2024, at the provincial Exhibition and Fair Center. The event aimed to establish Hoa Binh as a hub for fish and shrimp farming in the Da River region, turning it into a key economic sector. The festival also showcased the province’s cultural and ecological tourism potential, attracting both domestic and international visitors to promote tourism growth.
First Lobster Festival in Khanh Hoa
The Cam Ranh Lobster Festival 2024, themed “Shining Green Bay,” took place from August 3–11, organized by the Cam Ranh City People’s Committee. This large-scale cultural-tourism event aimed to introduce and highlight the cultural and economic values of Cam Ranh, leveraging the festival to attract investment and promote economic and tourism development in the region.
Ca Mau Shrimp Achieves BAP Certification
On August 16, 2024, Bureau Veritas Vietnam awarded the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification to Minh Phu’s “Shrimp-Rice Project in Bien Bach Dong Commune,” Thoi Binh District, Ca Mau Province. This marked the first BAP certification for a shrimp-rice farming area in Vietnam, following the earlier ASC certification. The milestone reflects a strong move toward sustainable aquaculture practices in the country.
Brazil Halts Tilapia Imports from Vietnam
The Department of Quality, Processing, and Market Development (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) received a letter (No. 65/2024/SDA/MAPA, dated February 14, 2024) from Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock regarding the suspension of tilapia imports from Vietnam. The ban, effective February 14, 2024, will remain in place until a risk assessment of the TiLV virus is completed, as stipulated in MAPA’s Decision No. 270.
Agricultural Loan Package Raised to VND 60 Trillion
On October 16, 2024, during a meeting with voters in Can Tho City, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh announced that the government had instructed the State Bank of Vietnam to research and increase the credit package for agriculture, forestry, and fisheries to VND 60 trillion. Currently, eight credit programs specifically support agriculture, particularly rice and fisheries, with an additional four tailored for the Mekong Delta, bringing the total to 12 programs aimed at supporting this critical region.
EU Recognizes 3 Vietnamese Organic Certification Bodies
On November 4, 2024, the European Commission issued Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2794, amending Regulation (EU) 2021/1378, to enhance oversight of organic certification bodies in non-EU countries, including Vietnam. This development reinforces transparency and quality in organic product certification and presents an opportunity for Vietnam to strengthen its reputation in the European market through certified, high-standard organic products.
End of Informal Border Trade with China by 2030
Decree 122/2024, effective December 1, 2024, introduced stricter regulations on border trade. From January 1, 2029, border residents must handle import-export procedures directly, and by January 1, 2030, informal exports to China will cease. All trade will be conducted through designated international border gates and checkpoints under bilateral agreements. These changes aim to enhance border trade management, ensure product quality, and meet international integration standards.
