China and Vietnam lead in supplying white fish to the U.S

According to data from the International Trade Centre (ITC), U.S imports of white fish in the first five months of this year reached 810 million USD, up 15% compared to the same period last year. China remains the largest supplier of white fish to the US during this period. The most popular white fish product among US consumers is frozen tilapia fillets – HS030461.

Over the past five years, 2022 recorded the peak of US white fish consumption with a volume of 457,000 tons, up 9% compared to 2021. Imports from China accounted for 45% of the volume, while Vietnam contributed 30%, ranking as the second-largest supplier of whitefish to the U.S.

In 2024, China remained its leading position as the largest white fish exporter to the U.S with the US importing 191,000 tons from China, a 6% increase from 2023, accounting for 47% of total US white fish imports. In 2024, the U.S. imported 123 thousand tons of whitefish from Vietnam, a sharp increase of 40% compared to the previous year, far surpassing other countries in whitefish supply to the U.S.

The top three whitefish products favored by US consumers are frozen tilapia fillets (HS030461), frozen cod fillets (HS030471) and frozen pangasius fillets. In the first five months of this year, US imports of frozen tilapia fillets reached 195 million USD, up 32%, accounting for 24% of total whitefish import value; frozen cod fillets reached 192 million USD, up 9%, accounting for 23.7% share and frozen pangasius fillets reached 138 million USD, up 2%, accounting for 17% share of the total U.S white fish import value.
