Pangasius farmer earn 1,000-2,000 dong/kg profit

Despite of the high feed price, the current selling price can help farmers earn profit

The increase in pangasius price was attributed to a high demand for materials to process for the export purpose of businesses in the Mekong Delta; meanwhile there’s just a few pangasius farming ponds being harvested.

The pangasius price ranges between 27,500 and 28,000 dong/kg in Cần Thơ, 5,000-6,000 dong/kg higher than the same period last year. The production cost stays at 26,000-27,000 dong/kg. With such a price, pangasius farmers may earn 1,000-2,000 dong/kg profit.

Thốt Nốt district is one of specialized pangasius farming areas in Cần Thơ. Most of the pangasius households signed sales contracts with processing businesses in the district and auxiliary areas when pangasius weighed up to commercial sizes. Thus, the sales were stable and farmers earned higher profit than the same period last year.

Thốt Nốt has spent 405.83 ha on aquaculture, with 367.05 ha being used for pangasius farming and 20.6 ha being used for pangasius broodstocks nursing. In August 2022, Thốt Nốt harvested 75,460 tons of farmed species, with 73,400 tons of pangasius, 25,040 tons higher than the same period last year.

Farmers Lê Văn Sơn, who has 4ha of pangasius pond in Cần Thơ, said: “Even though the feed price increased, pangasius was sold at 28,000 dong/kg and farmers earned 2,000 dong/kg profit. It is said that at the end of the year, the province will provide farmers with training courses and advanced techniques of food safety farming models such as VietGAP, BAP, and ASC so that pangasius can be sold at higher prices.
