According to the Vĩnh Long provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, last week the price of pangasius material continued to reduce 500 – 1,000 dong/kg as compared to the previous week.
Pangasius size 1.3 – 1.5 kg/head is priced at 27,000 VND/kg (down 1,000 VND/kg), while fish from 850gr to 1kg ranges between 26,000 and 26,500 VND/kg (down 500 VND/kg).
Over the past 9 months, the price of pangasius has fluctuated between 27,500 and 31,000 VND/kg, down 1,000 VND/kg from the same period last year. With the average production cost of 27,800 – 30,700 VND/kg, fish farmers are either experiencing losses or earning minimal profits.
Due to the low prices, fish farmers continue to face difficulties and are hesitant to invest further into fish farming, as they have incurred losses from previous farming ventures.
Currently, the province has 231 hectares of ponds and tanks used for intensive pangasius farming (out of a total of 340 hectares), which is a decrease of 20 hectares compared to the same period last year.
Meanwhile, prices for other farmed aquatic species remain stable at high levels. Specifically, tilapia and red tilapia are priced at 48,000 – 49,000 VND/kg, hybrid catfish at 35,000 VND/kg, farmed tilapia at 40,000 VND/kg, and farmed snakehead at 50,000 VND/kg.
